History of Bude
Bude is a seaside town located on the north coast of Cornwall. The town has a rich history that dates back to the medieval period, when it was an important market town and fishing port.
In the 19th century, Bude underwent a significant transformation, thanks to the construction of the Bude Canal, which provided a direct link between the town and the Bristol Channel. The canal enabled the town to become a major centre for the transportation of goods and materials, and led to the development of a thriving shipbuilding industry.
During World War II, Bude played a crucial role in the defense of Britain, serving as an important base for the Royal Navy and playing a key role in the D-Day landings. The town was also home to a number of military installations, including the RAF Bude listening station, which played a crucial role in intercepting enemy communications.
Today, Bude is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning beaches, rugged coastline, and rich history. Visitors can explore the town’s many historic buildings and landmarks, including the 13th century Bude Castle, the historic canal, and the impressive tidal pool at Summerleaze Beach. The town also offers a range of outdoor activities, including surfing, hiking, and cycling, making it an ideal destination for those looking to explore the natural beauty of Cornwall.
