History of St Mawes Castle
St Mawes Castle was constructed between 1539 and 1545 as part of King Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defenses. It was strategically placed to guard the Carrick Roads and protect against threats from the sea. The castle’s unique design features a central circular tower surrounded by three semi-circular bastions, creating a cloverleaf shape that provided optimal defense coverage. Although St Mawes Castle was never attacked, it remained an active defense site through various conflicts, including the English Civil War and World War II. Over the centuries, the castle has been preserved remarkably well, and today, it is managed by English Heritage. St Mawes Castle offers visitors an opportunity to step back in time and explore a key piece of England’s coastal defense history, with exhibitions and informative displays providing insights into its role and significance.
