The Daymark is an 11 metre tall navigational aid for ships located on the highest point of St Martin's.
It’s location at the northeast corner of the island and the highest point means it’s also one of the first things you see when flying to St Mary’s from the mainland. On clear days Cornwall is visible from the Daymark.
The Daymark was painted white until 1822 but by 1833 it had been painted red, and is now painted in bands of both red and white.

History of The Daymark
The Daymark was constructed by the local landowner, Sir John St Aubyn, to help mariners safely navigate their way to the Isles of Scilly. At the time, the islands were significant for trade and fishing, and the Daymark played a crucial role in ensuring safe passage for vessels approaching the coast. The tower was painted white, allowing it to stand out against the natural landscape and be seen from a distance. Over the years, the Daymark has become a beloved landmark, representing the maritime heritage of the Isles of Scilly. Although it is no longer used as an active navigational aid, the Daymark remains a symbol of the islands’ rich history and continues to attract visitors interested in its historical significance and scenic views.
