History of Sennen Cove

Sennen Cove has a rich history linked to fishing, with the village’s harbour once serving as a base for pilchard fishing and later as a refuge for fishing boats. The cove’s location near Land’s End made it a strategic spot for fishing, trade, and, historically, smuggling. Sennen Cove is also known for its historic lifeboat station, established in the 19th century, which continues to operate today and plays a vital role in local maritime safety. Over the years, Sennen Cove has transformed into a popular holiday destination, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and traditional charm. Despite its growth as a tourist spot, the village has maintained its character and connection to Cornwall’s maritime heritage.

With turquoise blue waters sweeping across a mile of whitesand beach, Sennen Cove is one of the Penwith Peninsula’s most spectacular bays.

A popular spot for surfers and families alike – coastal paths jut out toward sandy coves and beaches and provide epic views of Atlantic waves crashing against the wild, craggy coastline in every direction. Head one mile south of the main beach and you won’t be able to go any further as Land’s End – the UK’s most westerly point – lies just around the corner.

There isn’t much making up the village itself, which is all part of the charm. A lifeboat station (in operation since 1853) stands at the southern edge of the beach along with a small cluster of shops, cafes, art galleries and a village pub that harks back to the 17th Century.
