History of Porthtowan
Porthtowan has a rich history that reflects its connection to both the sea and the land. The village name, derived from the Cornish words for “cove of sand dunes,” hints at its natural features.
Historically, Porthtowan was part of Cornwall’s mining industry. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the area around Porthtowan was dotted with tin and copper mines, contributing significantly to the local economy.
The mining heritage is still visible today, with remnants of engine houses and mine workings scattered across the landscape.
During the 20th century, as the mining industry declined, Porthtowan gradually transformed into a popular holiday destination. The beach, with its excellent surfing conditions, attracted visitors from near and far. The construction of holiday accommodations and the development of local amenities helped to establish Porthtowan as a favored spot for tourists.
