History of Gyllyngvase Beach
Its name is derived from the Cornish word “gyllyn,” meaning “shallow water,” and “vas,” meaning “beach” or “cove.”
Originally a secluded cove, Gyllyngvase Beach gained prominence during the Victorian era when Falmouth emerged as a popular seaside resort destination. The construction of the nearby railway in the mid-19th century facilitated easier access to the beach, attracting visitors from far and wide.
Throughout the years, Gyllyngvase Beach has been a focal point for leisure activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. It also played a role in maritime history, serving as a landing point for boats and small vessels.
