History of Port Gaverne
In the 19th century Port Gaverne was a bustling hub for pilchard fishing and shipbuilding. The local economy thrived on the fishing industry, and many of the historic cottages that line the cove were originally built to house fishermen and their families.
The pilchard cellars, used for processing and storing fish, are still visible today and serve as a reminder of the cove’s industrious past. Additionally, the sheltered nature of Port Gaverne made it an ideal spot for repairing and building ships, further cementing its importance in local maritime activities.
As the fishing industry declined, Port Gaverne transitioned into a quiet residential area and a destination for visitors seeking the tranquility of the Cornish coast. The preservation of its historical buildings and the natural beauty of the cove have made it a popular spot for those looking to experience Cornwall’s coastal charm.
