History of Gillan
The history of Gillan is closely linked to its riverside location and the maritime activities that have long been a part of life along the Helford River. Like many small communities in the area, Gillan was traditionally involved in fishing and small-scale agriculture, with the river providing both sustenance and a means of transport. The waters around Gillan were also known for smuggling during the 18th and 19th centuries, as the secluded coves and inlets offered ideal cover for bringing in contraband. The surrounding farmland and old paths reflect the village’s agricultural heritage, while its connection to the Helford River has made it a popular spot for leisure boating in more recent years. Today, Gillan’s unspoilt landscape and quiet shores offer visitors a glimpse into Cornwall’s past, where the natural environment shaped the way of life for local communities.
