History of Port Navas Creek
Port Navas Creek has a history deeply connected to its natural resources and location. The creek became a focal point for oyster farming in the late 19th century, with its clear waters providing an ideal environment for cultivating oysters. This industry brought prosperity to the area and helped shape the local economy.
In addition to oyster farming, Port Navas Creek was historically used for small-scale shipping and trade. The creek’s sheltered waters made it a safe haven for boats, and its proximity to the Helford River allowed easy access to larger markets.
During World War II, the area around Port Navas Creek played a role in the war effort, with local boats and facilities being used to support military operations. The creek’s strategic importance added another layer to its rich history.
Today, while the oyster industry has declined, Port Navas Creek remains a beloved spot for both locals and visitors. The remnants of old oyster beds and historic buildings serve as reminders of its industrious past, while the natural beauty of the creek continues to attract those seeking a peaceful getaway.
