History of Gribbin Head
Gribbin Head’s daymark tower was built in 1832 by Trinity House to help sailors navigate the waters of St Austell Bay and safely distinguish it from nearby headlands. Standing 84 feet tall, the red-and-white striped tower remains unlit, serving as a daytime navigation aid rather than a lighthouse. Its bold colors make it visible from great distances, helping mariners identify their position along the coast. The headland itself has historical significance, with records indicating that the area was once used for grazing and small-scale agriculture. During World War II, Gribbin Head was also part of the coastal defense network, with lookout points established to monitor for enemy activity. Today, the headland is managed by the National Trust, which maintains the walking trails and ensures the preservation of this distinctive landmark. The daymark is occasionally open to the public, offering views from the top that extend across Cornwall’s rugged coastline.
