Kennack Sands
50° 0' 22" N 5° 9' 33" WKennack Sands is a large sandy beach on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula.
The beach here is divided into what are referred to as Kennack Sands West and Kennack Sands East, and become more-or-less separate at high tide. Dividing the two is a rocky outcrop called the Caerverracks which are home to a number of rockpools. Often there are Shetland ponies grazing on the grassy dunes above.
To the eastern end of the beach are the remains of a number of World War II defences. There are pill boxes on the hillside and an extensive anti-tank wall running along the back of the beach.
The area backing this end of the beach is a designated nature reserve and is home to many species of flora and fauna that only flourish in this unique coastal habitat.
With its south easterly aspect, Kennack Sands is often quite sheltered from the wind, and considerably warmer than west coast beaches. This also means it can be a popular option for surfers when everywhere else is too windy. Most of the summer though it is a great spot for learning to surf with small clean waves.
