History of Kenidjack Castle
Kenidjack Castle is an Iron Age hillfort located near the town of St. Just in southwest Cornwall. The fortification dates back to the late Iron Age, and is believed to have been built around 2,500 years ago.
The hillfort is located on a hilltop overlooking the Kenidjack Valley and the nearby coast, and was likely used as a defensive stronghold to protect the local population from raiders and invaders.
In the medieval period, a castle was built on the site, which likely gave the hillfort its current name. The castle was a small fortified manor house, and was inhabited by a local lord or noble.
During the English Civil War in the 17th century, Kenidjack Castle was occupied by Parliamentarian forces, who used it as a base to launch attacks on the nearby Royalist-held town of St. Just.
Today, visitors to Kenidjack Castle can explore the remains of the hillfort and castle, which include the ramparts, ditches, and some of the walls and foundations. The site offers stunning views over the Kenidjack Valley and the coast, and is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
