History of Prussia Cove
Prussia Cove has a storied past, famously associated with John Carter, known as the “King of Prussia,” a notorious smuggler who operated in the area during the 18th century. The cove’s name and its reputation as a smuggling haven are a testament to its history as a hiding place for contraband goods, which were secretly brought ashore and distributed throughout Cornwall. The hidden caves and rugged coastline provided ideal cover for these illicit activities. Nearby, a small group of buildings known as the Carter family’s base has survived, adding to the cove’s historical intrigue. Today, Prussia Cove maintains its secluded character, with its connection to Cornwall’s smuggling past continuing to attract visitors interested in the region’s rich history.
