History of Kit Hill
Kit Hill has a deep-rooted history, especially within Cornwall’s mining industry. Tin and copper mining began here in the 18th century, and the hill became an important mining site during the 19th century, with various mines operating on its slopes. Evidence of this industrial heritage can still be seen today, including old engine houses, mine shafts, and spoil heaps scattered across the landscape. In 1780, Kit Hill was gifted by King George III to his son, the Duke of Cornwall, who established several quarries and mines. The large chimney at the summit, known as the Prince of Wales Shaft, was built in 1858 and remains a notable landmark. Kit Hill’s mining operations declined by the late 19th century, and in 1985, the site was designated a country park to preserve its natural and historical significance. Today, Kit Hill provides an opportunity to explore Cornwall’s mining past while enjoying the stunning views and diverse wildlife that now inhabit the area.
