History of Porthchapel
Porthchapel’s history is closely linked to the nearby St. Levan Church, which dates back to the medieval period and sits on the cliffs above the cove. The area was historically part of a small farming and fishing community, with residents relying on the land and sea for their livelihoods. Porthchapel was also used by local fishermen, who took advantage of the cove’s sheltered waters to land their boats. Its remote location and rugged landscape have protected Porthchapel from significant development, allowing it to retain much of its natural beauty. Today, the cove is part of the South West Coast Path, attracting walkers who explore the coastal trail and enjoy views over the sea. Porthchapel continues to be a peaceful spot where visitors can appreciate both Cornwall’s natural landscapes and its heritage.
