Charlestown Harbour
50° 19' 44" N 4° 45' 22" WCharlestown is a famous harbour which is home to a variety of tall ships which come and go throughout the year.
Throughout the nineteenth century the small dock was packed with ships and the harbourside sheds and warehouses were abundant with complementary businesses such as boatbuilding, ropemaking, brickworks, lime burning, net houses, bark houses and pilchard curing.
Fast-forward to the present day and Charlestown feels like a place where you step back in time. It has survived as a working port and a small amount of china clay is still exported in an average of 30-40 ships a year. It has largely escaped modern development and remains one of the finest and most fascinating places on the Cornish coast.
Charlestown still harbours a variety of tall ships which come and go throughout the year. These old ships are employed in film projects all over the world and like Botallack Mine, it’s another filming location for Poldark.
The unique feel of Charlestown makes it a popular place for visitors, there are exceptional pubs, restaurants and cafes on the harbour front and at low tide there is a large beach to relax on and enjoy.

History of Charlestown Harbour
Charlestown Harbour is a historic port located on the south coast of Cornwall. The harbour has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century, when it was constructed by local entrepreneur Charles Rashleigh to serve the local mining industry.
The harbour was built using locally quarried stone and was designed to accommodate the large sailing ships that transported goods such as copper, tin, and china clay from Cornwall to ports around the world. At its peak, the harbour was a bustling center of industry, with dozens of ships arriving and departing each day.
During the 19th century, the harbour also played a key role in the transportation of emigrants to the new world, with many ships leaving from Charlestown to carry passengers to Australia and other parts of the British Empire.
Today, Charlestown Harbour is a popular tourist attraction, known for its well-preserved historic buildings and stunning views of the sea. The harbour is also a popular filming location, with several movies and TV shows, including Poldark and Doctor Who, being filmed on site. The harbour is home to several shops, restaurants, and galleries, and visitors can take a stroll around the docks or take a boat tour to explore the surrounding coastline.
