History of Pentewan Sands
Pentewan Sands has a history tied to its role as a small but active harbour in the 19th century, serving the local china clay and tin industries. The village of Pentewan once thrived as a port, exporting these resources to other parts of the UK and beyond. The harbour, originally built in the early 1800s by Sir Christopher Hawkins, allowed the area to flourish until it began to silt up and became less accessible to larger ships. By the early 20th century, the port’s use had declined, and the area transitioned to focus more on tourism. Today, remnants of the old harbour are still visible, providing a glimpse into Pentewan’s industrial past. The beach itself has become a popular leisure destination, with its history preserved in the surrounding village and the Pentewan Valley Trail, which follows the old railway line once used to transport goods from the mines to the harbour.
