The beach is backed by dunes and overlooks the picturesque St Ives Bay, presenting panoramic views that are especially magnificent at sunset.
The sands at Porthkidney are wide and flat, making it perfect for long, leisurely walks or beachcombing. During low tide, the beach extends far into the sea, revealing a vast area for exploration and play. It’s also a favoured spot for dog walkers, as dogs are allowed year-round, unlike many other beaches in the area which impose seasonal restrictions.
Access to Porthkidney Sands is a delightful adventure in itself. Visitors can take a scenic path from Lelant, passing through the West Cornwall Golf Club and alongside the estuary, where a variety of birdlife can be observed.
Porthkidney Sands is less crowded than its more famous neighbours like Carbis Bay, making it a hidden gem for those wishing to escape the busier tourist spots.

Directions to Porthkidney Sands
From St Ives Road in Lelant, turn onto Church Road and follow the signs to Porthkidney Sands. Park in the designated car park near St Uny Church. From there, a well-marked footpath leads through the scenic Lelant Saltings and alongside the golf course, reaching the beach in about a 10-minute walk. The path offers delightful views and brings you directly onto the northern end of Porthkidney Sands.
Parking for Porthkidney Sands
Parking is available at the bottom of the road from St Uny's Church, which serves as the closest access point to Porthkidney Sands. This car park offers a reasonable number of spaces and operates on a pay-and-display basis. It is an ideal starting point for visitors due to its proximity to the footpath leading directly to the beach. During off-peak seasons, parking is generally easier to find, but it's advisable to arrive early during summer to secure a spot.
