History of Portholland Beach
The villages of East and West Portholland have a history tied to Cornwall’s agricultural and fishing heritage, with their small harbours once serving local farmers and fishermen. In the 19th century, Portholland was a busy community, and remnants of this era can still be seen in the traditional stone buildings that line the beach. Though the fishing industry has declined, the area remains largely unchanged, with conservation efforts helping to preserve its historic character and natural environment. Portholland Beach was also featured in the BBC series Poldark, adding to its appeal for fans of the show. Today, the beach and its surrounding landscape offer a peaceful escape where visitors can enjoy the slow pace of Cornwall’s rural coast.
