History of Roger’s Tower
Roger’s Tower and Castle an Dinas hold a prominent position in the landscape and history of Penwith, Cornwall. Nestled within the rugged terrain, these sites offer a window into both the ancient and more recent past.
Castle an Dinas, dating back to the Iron Age, is one of the most significant hillforts in Cornwall, both in terms of its historical importance and its imposing size. Covering around 10 acres, this ancient fortification stands on one of the highest points in Penwith, providing strategic views across the land and towards the sea, suggesting its role in territorial control and defence. The fort’s design includes two concentric circles of formidable earthworks, comprising banks and ditches, which would have formed daunting obstacles for any would-be attackers.
Perched atop this ancient stronghold is Roger’s Tower, a folly built in the early 19th century by the Reverend Rogers. Constructed in memory of his friend, Captain John Rogers, who was killed in the Battle of Trafalgar, the tower is cylindrical and made from local granite, reflecting the enduring nature of its commemorative purpose. It is a typical example of the romantic follies built during this period, which were designed more for their picturesque appeal and historical emulation than any practical function.
