History of Mount Edgcumbe
Mount Edgcumbe is a historic country estate located in southeast Cornwall, overlooking Plymouth Sound and the River Tamar. The estate is named after the Edgcumbe family, who have owned the land since the 16th century.
The house was originally built in the 16th century, but was extensively rebuilt in the 18th century by Sir Richard Edgcumbe. The grounds of Mount Edgcumbe were also developed during this period, with the addition of formal gardens, terraces, and a deer park.
During World War II, the house and grounds were requisitioned by the military and used as a base for the Royal Navy. Following the war, the estate was returned to the Edgcumbe family, who opened the gardens to the public in 1954.
Today, the estate covers over 800 acres and features a range of attractions for visitors, including the Grade I listed house, extensive gardens, woodland walks, and a number of historic buildings and monuments. Mount Edgcumbe is also a popular location for weddings and events, with a range of venues available for hire.
