History of Porthgwarra
Porthgwarra has a rich history linked to the local fishing community and smuggling activities that were once common along Cornwall’s remote coves. The hand-dug tunnels leading down to the beach are a testament to the ingenuity of local fishermen, allowing them to transport boats and equipment to the water easily. These tunnels also served as storage for fishing gear and as escape routes for smugglers avoiding detection by customs officers. The area has remained largely unspoilt, with fishing still playing a small role in the local economy. Porthgwarra also gained recognition in recent years as a filming location for the popular TV series Poldark, drawing fans to explore the cove and its surroundings. Today, Porthgwarra is managed by the National Trust, ensuring the preservation of its natural and historical features for future generations.
